Gannett Corporation: An Influence in Wide Areas of Media

Gannett Corporation is a media giant that owns newspapers, television stations, periodicals, and even Internet sites. They can influence media in many ways, and influence their own media as well. For example, they publish USAToday, a nationwide daily newspaper that often provides articles to local Gannett newspapers. They also publish USAWeekend, a Sunday supplement to their many newspapers across the country. This monopolizes the news people read, because they read only Gannett publications, rather than reading more balanced coverage provided by a third-party supplement provider, such as American Profile or Parade, which are both Sunday supplements provided by other companies. Thus, the Gannett reader gets a very Gannett-oriented view of the news. If they live in an area with a Gannett television station, they will receive even more of a slant on their news and programming.
Gannett owns newspapers in 38 of the 50 states, which means they have a huge audience, and they can influence media by monopolizing certain areas. For example, in many medium-sized cities, they are the only local newspaper serving the area, and so, they influence the media by being so large and profitable they keep smaller publications from successfully entering the area and giving a different slant on news. By owning a variety of media, Gannett controls major segments of the population and influences what people read, watch on television, and even see in print (they own printing companies, too). A company this large can manipulate large segments of the media to fit their own mold, and lead people to other Gannett publications and broadcasts quite easily. For example, a newspaper supports news on a television station Web site, and partners with their own television station to further monopolize local coverage. Thus, they can influence wide areas of media and publishing in many areas, and as they grow, they can spread their influence even wider.
