The Acting U.S. Attorney General is Peter Keisler following the resignation of former U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales in September 2007. Mr. Keisler has not yet "warmed his bench" so to speak; hence, most of the articles taken for this paper were speeches of the former U.S. Attorney General. In the two speeches presented, Mr. Gonzales gave his opinions on two issues and included the importance of education in realizing the projects or undertakings discussed.
In Mr. Gonzales speech at the Southern Baptist Convention in Nashville, Tennessee last February 20, 2007, he said that: "Religious liberty is not confined to the members of one church, or the followers of one set of beliefs. It is a universal right that applies to people of all faiths. (Gonzales, 2007)" He gave specific examples on how certain sectors of the American society especially schools and local government units fail to recognize what religious freedom means and oftentimes they mistake this as a need to curtail one's religious freedom in order not to offend others. This he reiterated when he stated: "Not every religious freedom case is about willful intolerance. Sometimes it's a well-meaning city employee or school system that wants to do the right thing, but is afraid. Sometimes it's a person of faith who is so scared of offending anyone that he will err on the side of caution and ban anything that might be considered religious. (Gonzales, 2007)"
To help people – especially the American public – understand religious freedom better, Mr. Gonzales explained several measures undertaken by the Department of Justice. One of these measures is "initiating a program of public education, to make certain that people know their rights, and to build relationships with religious, civil rights, and community leaders to ensure that religious liberty concerns are brought to our attention (Gonzales, 2007)."
