Part philosophy lesson, part love story and part human story, "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" by Milan Kundera is as much about people as it is about human nature. Taking this in mind, this essay looks at the two main characters of the book.
To begin, it is important to understand where Tomas comes from in an intellectual sense. In the book, Tomas is shown to have come from the higher intelligence levels of Czech society- a part of society that was almost outlawed after the Soviet Union took over the city of Prague. This invasion also took away Tomas' method of making a living, so what is seen in Tomas is a brilliant mind that is damaged by the evil deeds of others (Kundera).
To put it simply, Tomas is a man who cannot be content with just one woman in his life. He involves himself in many affairs with women other than Tereza, but not for the sake of love or romance. Tomas is more of a deep thinker than he is any kind of romantic; the idea of romance seems to be absent from his mind, which in fact leads to his divided lifestyle. By being able to separate romance from relationships with women, he is able to get involved with a large number of women and not feel guilty or confused about it (Kundera). In this way, Tomas has literally divided his lifestyle into one where he can carry on with other women and still go home to Tereza and put on a display as if she is the only woman in his life. It is possible that Tomas is such an intelligent man and a deep thinker that he has been able to live any way that he chooses without having a second of worries about the consequences of what he is doing.
