Listening Skills

             Along its history, mankind has learned how to evolve and adapt to several forces of the environment. Probably the most relevant example in this sense is his ability to develop new skills that help him survive in the more complex and dynamic environment. Listening is one of the skills mankind has possessed since its beginnings, but it is only in the contemporaneous context that they understood the real implications of proper listening within the highly competitive business community. Business men have to pay close attention to what their collaborators and competitors are saying in order to seize an opportunity or dodge a threat; employers have to listen to the grievances of their staff members if they still wish to possess qualified personnel, and so on. As such, it has become of vital importance for the players in the business community to enhance and improve their listening skills.
             The best way to master the learning skill is to understand the main concepts that revolve around it. For instance, there are three stages that occur in the real listening process: hearing, understanding and judging. The first stage refers solely to hearing what the speaker is saying and being able to reproduce it, without any other thoughts in one's mind. "For example, say you were listening to a report on zebras, and the speaker mentioned that no two are alike. If you can repeat the fact, then you have heard what has been said" (Info Please, 2008). The understanding stage refers to taking what one has heard out of its context and interpreting it in their own way. "When you hear that no two are alike, think about what that might mean. You might think, "Maybe this means that the pattern of stripes is different for each zebra" (Info Please, 2008).
