Daylight Savings Time: Pros and Cons

Daylight Savings Time is the practice of turning clocks ahead one hour in the spring, and turning them back one hour in the fall. Daylight Savings Time happens in most countries around the world, but at different times during the year. Proponents of Daylight Savings Time believe that it not only adds more sunlight hours to the standard day, it saves money in energy, too, because people don't have to use as much electricity during daylight hours. Opponents believe that is no longer the case, because heating and cooling use is very different than it was when Daylight Savings Time first began, and that it actually harms some enterprises, like farming, because of the lengthy morning darkness during parts of Daylight Saving Time.
Daylight Savings Time began in 1905, when an Englishman thought of the idea, but it was not put into effect until 1916, during World War I in Europe. America began using the system in 1918. Many people believe that it began as a way to help farmers work in their fields earlier in the day, but that is not really the case. In fact, the longer afternoon sunlight that Daylight Savings Time creates makes it darker in the morning, particularly in the fall, and it does not help farming activities at all. Many studies also indicate that it does not save energy, either, that having longer dark morning hours actually increases the use of energy, rather than decreasing it. Yet, the popular belief is that Daylight Savings Time saves energy, and that has been difficult to debunk.
Daylight Savings Time does provide longer afternoon sunlight, and that boosts many businesses and recreational activities, since people have time to shop and play after their workday. It is also thought to slightly reduce traffic accidents, because people are commuting in daylight, rather than darkness. Currently in the United States, Daylight Savings begins on the last Sunday in March, and ends on the first Sunday in November.
