Environmental Code of Ethics

             Introduction – the Need for Ethical Codes
             Without a code of ethics a business suffers, and the same can be said of the environment if there is no code of ethics for leisure areas and parks. The Random House dictionary defines ethics as "a system of moral principles" (ethics, 1988), but that does not fully explain what ethics means. The code of ethics for any company, for example, is very important, especially when it comes to conflicts of interest, sexual harassment, hiring, and firing (LaCroix, 1979; Elgesen, 1996). These are the most serious issues for most companies today, just as they have been in the past, and companies want to be fair to their employees while still ensuring that all employees understand what the rules are and what they can and cannot do when it comes to appropriate behavior at work (Eisenhardt, 1999).
             Where the environment is concerned the code of ethics must be very different, because many of the issues that would be seen and dealt with in a business are not the same as they are in areas like parks and campgrounds. What is acceptable in one area of the country or the world may not be acceptable in others, also, and therefore it is necessary to provide people who come to leisure areas with some specific rules and guidelines that they must follow when they are there. This can help to avoid problems and keep people from doing damage to the natural beauty that they spend time in.
             When there are ethical rules and regulations in place, however, some people will still ignore them, and there is no guarantee that people will perform at their best and be respectful where the environment, animals, or other people are concerned. There are always going to be problems. However, having no code of ethics does not give those who would abide by it the chance to do so, and that is why the idea of a code of ethics for parks and leisure areas is so important.
