Sexual identity can be described as the focal point of our sexual
selves as human beings. Our sexual identity begins to develop at birth and
continues to develop as we grow older. There are countless factors that
can influence one's sexual identity, and these factors may lead up to the
gradual formation of our sexual identity. Sexual identity, like many
things in life, may adapt and evolve as we go through the various stages of
life. Several things that may influence the development of our sexual
identity can include: gender identity, environmental factors, value
systems, historical perspectives, love, and relationships.
Sexual Decision Making
Making informed sexual decisions is extremely important. When it
comes to the sexual decision making process it's important to keep in mind
that knowledge is power. At this point in my life I have developed a good
set of values and I am able to make responsible decisions regarding sex. I
automatically apply my critical thinking skills before making any sexual
decisions. As a teenager I had completely different value systems when it
came to sexual decisions. I might even go as far as stating that as a teen
I leaned toward the hedonist set of values when it came to sexual decision
making. During my teen years I was not as informed as I am now, and that
resulted in reckless decisions that could have led to disastrous outcomes.
After participating in this course I have learned many new things
about my own sexuality and my sexual decision making process. I have come
to realize that when it comes to value systems I am a rationalist. I like
to analyze the situation from all points before making any set conclusions.
I also base my decisions upon situation ethics, which means that I have a
somewhat mixed value system. When it comes to thinking critically I would
definitely describe myself as a skeptic. ...
