Home School vs. Public School

             Education is an important part of society because so many employers require a solid education before an applicant is considered for a job. For 13 years, children are taught how to read, write, do math, speak a different language, use a computer, and much more. Therefore, parents are faced with the question of where their child should be educated. There are many factors that should be considered when choosing public-schooling and home-schooling.
             The first factor to be considered is classroom size. If a child is social and likes being around others, overcrowded classrooms might not be such a learning obstacle. However, lots of children are shy and many children today are diagnosed with ADD and ADHD and overcrowded classrooms would definitely prohibit efficient learning. In the 2009-2010 school year, the average pupil/teacher ratio was 16-1. For those home-schooled, the pupil/teacher ratio is averaged at 5-1. This low class size could be both beneficial and detrimental. Lots of parents worry that home-schooling children would keep them under-socialized and keeping children out of normal school environments would keep the children from learning how to interact with others. This could be a bad thing when the children are put into a work-field and are expected to interact with co-workers and bosses. They might be less prepared to deal with different people and therefore less of an asset to companies and businesses. However, the small classroom size could be beneficial because the more time a student has one-on-one with a teacher, the more that student is likely to understand the information being taught. Home-schooled students are better educated according to the Home-school Academic Achievement, Grades K to 12. According to a study, 89 percent of home-schooled students nationally, achieved passing test scores in reading while only 50 percent on public-schooled students passed (anonymous).
