As a student studying to be a teacher, I have found myself to be
concerned and interested how children feel about education and coming to
school. Being the oldest of four children I have been able to watch and see
the differences that have been made in schools over the years. My concerns
first began to surface when I would come home at the end of the day and ask
my brothers how their day was at school. When asking them this question I
would often get a short one word answer along the lines of just "good" or
"fine". But that was not really the part that concerned me the most,
following asking how their day went I would ask them what they did at
school that day, and they would respond with "nothing". The first time I
heard this I was shocked and did not know what to say in response. After
the first time this happened I decided to continue asking questions. I
followed with asking detailed questions to really make them think about
what they did that day. What I started to assume was that the things that
they are learning or the activities that they are doing are not sticking
with them. From personal experience I remember that when I was young and in
school I would be able to give a detailed play-by-play answer when I was
asked what I did at school that day. So after proposing this question to
myself I decided to try and determine some underlying reasons as to why it
seems education has been changing and why it looks as if children have been
losing interest in education and going to school in general.
I began to brainstorm reasons as to why this could be happening and
after a while one of the biggest issues that came to mind was the emphasis
that the state has placed on state testing and preparing the students for
these tests. Teachers are taking weeks out of their school year to do
practice tests, review and prepare for kids to take the tests. When I look
back on my experiences in sch...
