Protecting Individuals from Abuse and Harm

             Abuse is the implication of an act or recurrent acts that improperly harm, injure, mislead, deceive, insult, maltreat, corrupt and or physically injures an individual. Abuse can happen to anyone at any time in their life, abuse is often carried out by a family member or caregiver however this is not always the case. Some different forms of abuse include physical abuse this when an individual inflicts physical injury, harm, pain or intends on doing so. Verbal abuse is the use of words to condemn, control or inflict hurt. Sexual abuse is unwanted or unlawful use of a person or photos for sexual gratification without consent or of legal age. Psychological emotional abuse is failure to meet psychological needs and or blackmailing someone emotionally. Abuse can also be an act of neglect persistently not providing the essential means to sustain their basic needs or non-organic failure to thrive is failure to meet developmental milestones when there is no reasonable medical reason present. Abuse can also occur when a vulnerable person is persuaded to enter into a financial contract, theft or exploited concerning material possessions to which that individual has not consented to or understood fully. The definition of abuse according to the Cambridge Dictionary (online) is "To use or treat someone or something wrongly or badly, especially in a way that is to your own advantage." Different forms of abuse can occur at the one time and similar signs of abuse be present in all.
             There are many predisposing factors that can steer an individual to potentially carry out abuse. These factors simply highlight that there is a risk that abuse may occur. One factor for abuse occurring may be that the victim or perpetrator could have been subjected to abuse in the past which would lead them to think abuse was normal.
