Due to advances in technology, time or location is no longer a factor in obtaining a college degree. Education is important and a must-have in today's society. The lack of education can impede someone's career progress drastically. A college degree is required for most jobs on the market today. Also, due to the bad economy, a college degree is needed to compete with the other applicants. Fortunately, in today's technology-driven world, students have a choice when obtaining their education – traditional classroom or online courses.
Flexibility in class attendance is the main reason students prefer online courses. Online courses accommodate the schedule of a mother working full-time that wants to attend her child's activities in the evening. Lectures and discussions can be reviewed late at night, early in the morning or during a child's nap-time. Traditional classroom courses are scheduled at the same time and same day each week with no flexibility. This may not be conducive for a student that is working full-time and has other duties at home. This type of arrangement does work for the student that is not self-disciplined or self-motivated.
A student that attends online classes must be very organized, efficient, self-disciplined, and self-motivated. Unlike traditional classrooms, students will not be alerted by the professor each class period about upcoming projects or tests. Students will not be able to converse with fellow students before, during, or after class about looming deadlines. Students taking online courses have to be self-motivated to organize their schedule each week to ensure the deadline completes all assignments, projects or tests.
