Year around schooling is becoming more popular across the country. There are many advantages and disadvantages of school systems that run for nine weeks, and then take a three week break. Both traditional and nontraditional learning centers keep the mandatory one hundred eighty days of classes set by our government. Every year the question comes up, is giving students three months of summer break a good idea? In my opinion it is not. I will explain why.
According to the" California State department of Education", receiving three months break from school throughout the year in comparison with giving it consecutively would be more beneficial for students. "The year around calendar allows students to attend school nine weeks at a time, and a three week break in between". "Breaks being three weeks long, would allow students to come back fresh and relax without losing ground on basic fundamentals". During the summer session, students would receive a four week break. Since students are not in the routine of regular reading, writing, and math, I believe basic fundamentals are forgotten.
Put together from parents and school staffs, are some pros and cons listed on a website called "Ilovindia.com". To list a few pros that sparked my interest include; a decrease in childcare expenses, small trips throughout the year, schools not used in the summer lack efficiency. Some cons to take for consideration would include utility bill increases, parents with two children, one in year around versus traditional might find it difficult to coordinate their schedules.
The studies made at "California State Department of education", show year around students produce higher test scores than students from a customary school schedule.
