Deciding my current work-related values is an important step in growing up. I know that they will soon become the characteristics of my future occupation. While going through the list I thought about the ones that were most important to me, and chose the top five. Accomplishment, economic return, helping others, pleasure, and recognition are my most important work-related values. Each one is an active part of me and choosing them has made me feel more mature and independent.
One of my important work values is accomplishment, knowing that I have done well. This value has actually always been important to me since I was a little girl. From something as little as folding all my clothes to reading more than one book during summer vacation. A pat on the back is something I gave myself often. Having this value has got me to do all my homework, strive higher than a 75, graduate high school, and get into my dream college of course. Accomplishment has become even more important to me because although I am the youngest of my mother's children, I am the first to graduate high school and go to college; major accomplishment for me and my family. Accomplishment is seeing the joy in my mother's eyes, and feeling my confidence level rising. When I have failed at accomplishing something I set my mind to, it's something I can never really forget. Luckily I am one those people that does not give up so easily, and will continue going.
I was also raised in a single parent home. So I didn't have the best birthdays or Christmas's. I always thought about how my mother could manage to cook dinner every night, pay all the bills, give us lunch money, and have a little pocket money. Another one important value is economic return; I want to have a career that pays well. It may sound cliche but I want to buy my mother a house one day.
