In the first scene of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers," one of the main characters, Dr. Miles Bennell, is shown in the emergency ward while a psychiatrist comes to examine him. Bennell is frantically screaming non-stop until he identifies himself as Dr. Miles Bennell and attempts to recall the events up to that point. The movie flashes back to the story he is revealing. The setting takes place in the fictional town of Santa Mira, California. Dr. Bennell returns home from a business trip when his secretary informs him that some of his patients could not wait for his return and wants to see him and only him. Strangely, when he arrives at the office half of his patients who were anxiously waiting on his return have cancelled their appointments. This raises a little suspicion for Dr. Bennell. Later, another one of his patients and former girlfriend, Becky Driscoll, arrives to tell him her concerns about her cousin who has stated that she thinks something is wrong with their uncle. After speaking with the cousin, he realizes that she should see a specialist, and he sets her up an appointment with a psychiatrist in the town. The psychiatrist assures him that he has seen it before, and it is a simple epidemic mass hysteria that has hit the town.
Later that evening, things get even more odd for Dr. Bennell when he finds two bodies. A friend tells Dr. Bennell that he has found a body that appears to look like just like himself with all of his features, but it is not fully developed, and his friend thinks Dr. Bennell should come take a look. The second body is found in the basement of Becky, which appears to look just like her also. Bennell then calls the psychiatrist again so he can come over to see for himself. When the doctor arrives, the bodies are missing, and he accuses Dr. Bennell of falling into the hysteria as well.
