The consumption of alcohol and the way people behave while intoxicated has been a hot topic in our society for over a century. Alcohol is the last legal, non-prescriptive substance that impairs the judgment of the American public. The consequences caused by intoxicated drinkers are often very negative. Whether its someone being killed or injured by a drunk driver, a teenager sent to the hospital over alcohol poisoning, or even a family's house trashed by unruly adolescents during a high school party, alcohol is often a big liability that many people cannot handle. Excessive alcohol consumption leads to around 100,000 deaths a year, mostly due to drunk driving. On the other hand, alcohol can be a good thing if used responsibly. For example, a glass of wine does not only enhance the taste of a meal but is also healthy when used sparingly and part of a healthy diet. It can also be a big moneymaker for our country. The taxation of alcohol brings in millions of dollars for our government annually. When used in moderation, an adult beverage can also make a social gathering fun and more enjoyable. However, there are different meanings of acceptable behavior depending on what kind of social gathering you are apart of. A Greek function on a college campus will have a completely different environment than a wedding reception. But at the same time there are underlying similarities. There are many different ways a person is expected to behave depending on what type of social function that person is apart of.
