Political Outlook of Thomas More and Jean Froissart

             Thomas More and Froissart are both medieval authors of an era when English society was ruled by a king and the governing body consisted only of wealthy property-owners. The authors were both members of the aristocratic ruling class of the time period. Froissart is the author of Froissart's Chronicles in which he tells of the rebellion of the common people against the aristocrat's. He is a prideful member of the aristocratic society, and his writing is ripe with dissension towards the common people. More depicts the "perfect" society in his book Utopia. In the book he creates a clever satire: he presents what appears to be a humanist society but, in actuality, is one that consists only of aristocrats. The authors create very different political studies but their political values prove to be quite similar. They both believe that common people are the biggest threat to society, uneducated common people should not be a part of government, and government should be ruled by an educated society.
             Froissart sees the common people as the biggest threat to society. This is evidenced in his continuous reference to these people as "rivers" (loons) and his conspicuous and, at times, almost humorous attempt at making them look as atrocious as possible. For example, in one of his headings he writes, "The evil deeds that these commons of England did to the King's officers, and how they sent a knight to speak with the King". In the text to follow, however, it is written that only one officer, Sir John Newton, is even approached by the peasants, and all they do is threaten him into fetching the king for them. This self-contradicting exaggeration is a common occurrence in the chronicle.
             Throughout his writing, Froissart undercuts the competencies of the common people. He presents harsh and often unfounded attitudes towards the rebels. This is, in part, because he belongs to the educated upper class who is the target of the rebellion. Through...
