?Different rulers have different views regarding law and justice. Some rulers create laws for their own benefits whereas others create laws for the benefit of the city. In this essay, I will describe both those kind of rulers. One is Creon in Antigone, who puts the love for his city and its law above familial ties, but is actually driven by his love for power. The other is Socrates in The Republic, who creates laws so that the people in his city can live peacefully.
Antigone is a tragedy written by Sophocles. It characterizes Antigone as the main character. Oedipus and Jocasta's incestual love result in four children: Eteocles, Polynices, Ismene, and Antigone. After Oedipus's death, Polynices and Eteocles agreed to alternate as king. However, Eteocles refused to give up power to Polynices and this resulted in a battle in which the two brothers ended up killing each other. Eteocles died defending the city whereas Polynices died fighting against it. Antigone begins right after the battle ended. It starts with Antigone lamenting the fact that the king of Thebes, Creon, allows proper burial rites for Eteocles, but does not allow the same for Polynices.
Creon is Jocasta's brother and hence, uncle to Antigone. He married Eurydice and has a son, Haemon, who is Antigone's betrothed. He is a practical man and distances himself from Oedipus' tragic family line. He is only interested in political and social order, as he has told Antigone. After Oedipus' death, he surrendered himself entirely to the throne and took over as king of Thebes. Creon believes that Eteocles should be buried properly because he died defending his city; whereas his brother should not be honored with the same rites because he died fighting against the city, and anyone who tries to honor Polynices will be sentenced to death. This upsets Antigone, and being the rebel that she is, she wants to fight for her family and give him the burial rites that she thinks he deserve...
