Dead Man's Path by Chinua Achebe

             Now more than ever, the "golden rule" is needed or should be used by people. If you are not familiar with the term, the "golden rule" simply means to treat people the way you would like to be treated. It may sound simple but it is not as easy as it seems. In Chinua Achebe's short story, "Dead Men's Path", he is trying to stress the importance of this life lesson, respect and communication between different groups; this is still as relevant today as it was when the story was written forty years ago.
             With the recent catastrophic weather on the East coast, it is easy to think back to Achebe's short story and the meaning behind it. People, strangers, are helping each other get through one of the worst things this area has ever been through. The acts of kindness and selflessness are remarkable. People who have lost everything are still helping others and finding the strength to move past the devastation. People like this are truly living their lives in such a positive way and deserve so much more than what they sometimes get in return. There are also things like looting and price gouging occurring and it is a shame that people can do this to one another, especially after something so horrible that has happened. These people, like Obi, will at one point reap what they sow. The main character, Obi, from "Dead Men's Path" definitely fell short in the selflessness and kindness category. He was more concerned about himself, his wife, their status, and whether he could prove to others his level of capability, more than anything else. He thought that because he had a higher education that he knew more than the elderly, the villager, or the other teachers. If Obi had been the wiser and knew that one gets what one puts out, maybe he would have treated the village and the villagers a bit differently.
