Medical marijuana was legalized in Michigan during the last election on November 4, 2008. Michigan's Medical Marijuana Law, Initiated Law 1 of 2008, received an unbelievable 63% of votes, receiving the majority support in 83 of Michigan's counties. This law went into effect on December 4, 2008, and Michigan becomes the thirteenth state to legalize medical marijuana. One reason marijuana has been legalized in these thirteen states is that studies have shown that marijuana helps in medical cases - whether it's used for treatments, as a pain reliever, to assist with appetite loss, etc. Marijuana use has proven positive in the medical field. Webster's Dictionary defines marijuana as the dried leaves and flowering tops of the pistillate hemp plant that yield THC. It can be smoked for an intoxicating effect. The THC found in marijuana is also known as tetrahydrocannabinol, which is the chemical compound found in the cannabis plant. Marijuana has been used for medicinal purposes for several years in the states and in other cultures and through my research, I plan to discuss the history of marijuana, it's used, the pros and cons of using marijuana, the reason why our government has been opposed to legalizing marijuana and the different cultures that freely use marijuana today - its' currently being used in many countries to assist in medical treatment (http://www.mpp.org/states/michigan/). The amount of information available on the medical applications of marijuana is vast because it can be used as an antiseptic, an analgesic, a pain reliever and as a sedative. To better understand marijuana, we have to look into what marijuana is, and it's different applications as a prescription drug.
