Childhood obesity is a serious issue in today's society. Many children, of all different ages and races suffer from obesity. There are reasons why these children are suffering from this serious problem. Childhood obesity in America causes many health and social problems for children.
One of the reasons why there are children who are overweight is because of video games. Children who play video games typically don't get the exercise they need to help them burn calories. They aren't getting the exercise that all young children need to stay healthy. While you're playing video games, you don't notice how many calories your consuming and you tend to over eat. Gamer's consume an average of 163 more calories through the day. Blood test for appetite-related hormone levels showed that playing games actually made them hungrier (Blackwell). Gamer's think that by playing games they should be "rewarded" with great tasting foods that are very unhealthy for a person.
Kindergartners today are much heavier then the Kindergartners in the 1970's and 1980's. Studies show that these kids will most likely become overweight in the years to come. Ashlesha Datar, a senior economist said, "It's not just kids who are already overweight getting more and more so, there is an entire shift. Even those who are normal weight are gaining weight" We can get childhood weight gain under control by putting them in programs to encourage better eating habits. No high fat, high-sugar, and high caloric snacks, include this with kids even normal weight (Goodwin).
