Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton

Ethan Frome takes place in Massachusetts in the late-19th
century. The film relates the sad story of reclusive farmer Ethan Frome.
Considering himself too long for romance, he enters into a loveless
marriage with a wealthy but spiteful young women name Zeena. Things become
nearly unendurable when Zeena becomes an invalid, imperiously seeking her
husband's attentions day and night. Ethan seeks solace in an affair with
Zeena's pretty cousin Mattie, who has arrived to act as housekeeper. In
this essay I will discuss the tension between Zeena and Mattie characters,
Ethan's passion for Mattie and a comparison with the book and film.
In the book and film, the four main characters are the narrator, Ethan,
his wife, Zeena and Mattie, the house assistant. The narrator of the novel
notices a crippled, and sad-looking man in town, whose name is Ethan Frome.
The narrator meets Ethan when the man who drives him to the local train
station is unable to take him further and a townsman suggests that the
Ethan drove the narrator back and forth for a while until one winter day,
huge amounts of snow block their path. Ethan invites the narrator to his
home to stay the night. At the Frome farm, the narrator sees
what makes Ethan so miserable; the two women who live with him. One women a
tall, pale woman, which is Zeena Frome, Ethan's wife. The other woman,
who is the cheerful, sweet cousin who comes to Starkfield to help Ethan care
for Zeena, Mattie. The narrator.then begins to suspect the turn of events
that led to the tragic fate of Ethan and Mattie.
The imagery aspect of the film Ethan Frome and the image of Zeena in the
film is very similar to novel. However, the film is different from the
novel because Zeena is shown through different perspectives; the
emphasis of her character is much more exaggerated throughout the film, and
the transition in her characteristics is much more evident.
