Advertising has been around for more than a century. It is used to encourage or persuade audiences to make or continue new actions for various purposes such as solicitation, raising awareness, education, and information, etc. (McQuerrey, n.d., "Introduction," para.1) Advertising that focus on consumers, urge them to spend their money on a company's products or services is known as solicitation. This type of advertising often shows itself in the form of print advertisements, and electronic media to make their products or services well known to the public. (McQuerrey, n.d., Solicitation section, para.2) Raising awareness uses the same advertising strategies of solicitation for different purposes. An advertising campaign developed by a nonprofit or a community organization, etc. makes people aware of an issue such as an endangered species or forest protection, etc. instead of trying to persuade people to buy goods or services. (McQuerrey, n.d., Raising Awareness section, para.4) Advertising can also be used as a tool to educate or give information about something or someone. For instance, advertising campaign against smoking during pregnancy focuses on the bad effects that can cause to the mother and the baby's health. By providing statistical information and disturbing images to make them know the consequences could prevent or at least reduce the problems.
