It is said that "history repeats itself", meaning that today's society and government will do the same things as our ancestors did in the past. This also can be said about lessons that were once taught in the past. An example of lessons that are around or active in today's society and government can be found in the play "Antigone". The lessons of "Antigone" are still relevant today, these lessons are seen in the decisions of our government and society in general. Looking at the past and present, the way we treat others or deal with certain situations are still the same as they were in the past.
Something that is seen in both the past and present is people in a new position of power that end up turning into a tyrant of some sort. The same can be said about Creon in "Antigone" when he became king after the death of Oedipus (Antigone's father) and the rightful heir Polynices (Antigone's brother).
The fact that he would not let anyone bury and honor Polynices without being considered a traitor speaks volumes: "This is my command, and you can see the wisdom behind it. As long as I am King, no traitor is going be honored with the loyal man" (1.1.37-38). When Bush came into office he made life changing for the majority of America. He sent our troops into the Middle East searching for 'weapons of mass destruction", which were never found even to this day. He wasted time and money that America could have used towards something more helpful to the well-being of the nation; the choices he made were very costly to the nation. Within today's society and government things have not changed when it comes to the choices made and the way people are treated.
When Antigone was brought before Creon for honoring her brother she displayed martyrdom, meaning she was not afraid to die for her beliefs. Creon's law forbids anyone from honoring a "traitor" in his eyes, but Antigone w...
