Rio de Janeiro is a city known around the world for its beautiful people with great bodies. Whether it be a city tour guide, established businessman, or the concierge at the hotel desk, it seems like just about everyone in this city is trim and in good physical shape. People here are always prepared to look good out on the beach. However, the people eat terribly! Most people eat tons of red meats, loads of sugar, and pastries. But how do they eat all this junk and stay in such good shape? We will explore the dietary and exercise habits of the Brazilian people, from personal observation, to discover just how they stay in such good shape.
Red meat is the meat of choice for the carioca (demonym for the people of Rio). They love it and, while there, a visitor can expect to eat it for all meals of the day. They also eat chicken, occasionally, but, ironically, they rarely eat fish. As stated by a city tour guide for Adventure World upon questioning of why the Carioca do not eat fish, "Why would we eat fish? It is not as good as red meat. Why would we not eat what tastes best?". Even though it is a coastal town, many restaurants do not even offer fish and, if they do, it is normally quite expensive. This is because the demand for it is so low that there are not many suppliers of fish and, therefore, prices are driven upwards.
The Brazilian barbecue is a mainstay of the food culture and diet as well. Brazilian barbecue, or Churrascaria, is a place where meat is cooked in Churrasco style, which translates roughly from the Portuguese for 'barbecue'. It is a distinctly South American style of cooking. At a barbecue, attendees are brought out full flanks of meat still on the stake which they were cooked on. The server slices off pieces of the meat and continues on to the next person. There are several servers that come around in this fashion, all with different meats. They will serve the attendees until they are told to stop. Oh...
