Mike Ilitch was born on July 20th, 1929 in Detroit Michigan he was the son of Macedonian immigrants. His father Sotir worked for the Chrysler Corporation as a tool and die maker. A tool and die maker is a manufacturer who makes fixtures, dies, molds, cutting tools. Ilitch graduated from Cooley High School in 1947. After high school, Ilitch join the United States Marine Corps in which served four years. After his duty with the Marines he signed a minor league contract with the Detroit Tigers for $3,000. Ilitch was the second baseman for the majority of his minor league career.
Ilitch didn't have much success playing minor league baseball and have never made it out of the minor leagues. He played for teams such as the Detroit Tigers, Washington Senators, and New York Yankees farm systems. His baseball career lasted from four years from 1952-1955.
In 1954, he met an airline reservation clerk named Marian on blind date set up by his father Sotir. Mike and Marian were married a year later and ended up having seven children: Carole, Christopher, Lisa, Atanas, Ron, Denise and Michael Jr.Ilitch founded Little Caesars in 1959 with $10,000 he and his wife had saved up.
Originally, Ilitch wanted to name it Pizza Treat, but his wife suggested a different name; Little Caesars. The first Little Caesars restaurant was opened up in Garden City Michigan inside a shopping mall. Ilitch came up with the idea of making pizzas when he was playing baseball in the minor he made pizzas to help support him; there was something about the water and flour that is used to make pizza that captivated him. Something so easy to bake made him a billionaire. In 1962 Little Caesars had its first franchise. Today, there are over 4500 Little Caesar's restaurants worldwide.
It was not until the early 1980's when Ilitch entered the sports market. He had purchased the Detroit Red Wings in 1982 for $8 billion dollars from Bruce Norris. The Red
