Climate Change and the Island of Mauritius

According to Singaporean experts, the island of Mauritius is far from being spared from the effects of climate change. To what extent is the star and key of the Indian Ocean safe from the wrath of nature? For a meteorologist, Prem Goolaup, the impact of climate change and recurrence of extreme weather conditions like the recent floods are a concern for the Mauritian authorities. "The climate of the island states in the South West Indian Ocean (SWIO) is influenced by the ocean-atmosphere interactions. They are affected by tropical cyclones and other extreme weather events. Some of them like St. Brandon or Agalega islands are threatened by rising sea level" he said. Among the many observed effects is the disruption of rainy season during summer. Although the duration of rainfall cycles decreased, heavy rainfalls caused flash flooding, especially during February and March.
"The effects of climate change have also been felt on the agricultural sector and other coastal regions. The problem of erosion is now a glaring reality. Moreover, it becomes increasingly difficult to predict events such as droughts and floods," said Mr. Khalil Elahee, director of Energy Efficiency Management Office. He further added that the scarcity of cyclones is proof of climate change. "Scientific tests have shown that fewer cyclones converge in our region. They have too much energy due to the temperature rise," he pronounced. Mr. Khalil Elahee also expressed the need to review the architecture and energy needs of our buildings and land use planning. "We should turn to renewable energy to delay the adverse effects of climate change," he said.
Mr. Jean Max Baya, from the Ministry of Environment, said that works to counterfeit climate change have already started. "We cannot fight against climate change, but we can mitigate its effects. Our beaches have been affected after the melting of icebergs. Pollution engendered this climate change. We have implemented sev...
