Love is Not all

             For the poem that we had to analyze, I choose Love is Not All by Edna St. Vincent Millay. This poem sets the stage on expressing that love isn't the most important thing in life, but in essence you would do anything for it. In addition, love is not something that will help you physically, however, it always goes back to the fact that it's the most influential and overpowering thing over you. In this poem, Millay uses words such as "Yet" in order to show you the reader that even though she hates it, it's not something she is able to live without.
             In the first portion of this poem, lines 1-6 are continuous;
             Love is not all; it is not meat nor drink
             Nor slumber nor a roof against the rain,
             Nor yet a floating spar to men that sink,
             And rise and sink, and rise and sink again;
             Love cannot fill the thickened lung with breath,
             Nor clean the blood, nor set the fractured bone;
             Millay shows us in these six lines on what love is not. For example, "Nor clean the blood, nor set the factured bone." She implies that love isnt the answer. Love cannot help you heal from a broken bone or even save you if you were sinking. The persona she uses states the attributes that love lacks, that it cannot protect, shelter, or even nourish the human body.
             We think we know where the poem is going and then there is a sharp contrast between lines one through six and lines seven and eight. It is lines seven and eight that are probably the most important lines in the poem. The lines state:
             Yet many a man is making friends with death
             Even as I speak, for lack of love alone.
             From this line on it takes the reader into a new direction. It is here that we realize the poem has a deeper message. The mood and tone change. Millay is telling us that even though she sometimes doesn't agree with it, but without love we may suffer and are not experiencing the fullness of life.
