Everyone is fast asleep in the Smith home on a midsummer night. Jamie and Katie, the parents of five-year-old Lisa and seven-year-old Nick, are resting assured that the next day will be bright and cheery. Around three in the morning, James and Katie are awakened by the sound of a window breaking. By the time James and Katie reach their children's room it is too late. Both Lisa and Nick have been shot and are lying on the floor. James and Katie do not own a gun. They were ordered to turn them in by the government as an action for gun control. This is only one example of why gun control is often harmful. If gun control laws continue to increase, we as American citizens will not be allowed to own guns. There are already approximately 20,000 gun control laws existing. The overwhelming number of laws proves that these precautions are not having an effective influence on the problem. Therefore, gun control laws are unnecessary because they only affect law-abiding citizens. They do not decrease the amount of violence and crimes, and the number of accidental deaths caused by children is extremely small.

According to Thomas Jefferson, "Laws that forbid the carry of arms... disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants" (www.nraila.org). What Thomas Jefferson said still holds true today. Many Americans are not sure what laws we have today but feel that America should have stricter laws not knowing how strict the laws are (Carter 58).
Do you think criminals will turn in their unregistered guns? No. "There are over 220 million guns in America, 65 million of which are handguns. One-third of Americans households contain at least one gun" (LaPierre 11). Most Americans use their guns for...
