Cloward and Ohlin's differential opportunity theory is broken up into three different types of gangs. Conflict gang, criminal gang, and the retreat gang.
I am going to focus on only the criminal gang. Criminal gangs are the most prevalent gangs in society, and they hold stability in society. "They teach youngsters the kinds of people to exploit, the necessary skills, the importance of loyal relationships with criminal associates, and the way to make the right connection with shady lawyers, bail bondsmen, crooked politicians, and corrupt police officers. Adolescent members of criminal gangs like adult criminals in the good neighborhood, are involved in extortion, fraud, theft and other activities that yield illegal income." (Alder, Muller & Laufer, 2004)
A good example of this would be the all-famous Mr. Alfonso (Al) Capone. Al Capone born in the late 1800's, and was brought up in the heart of New York City. He
became very involved and connected with organized crime
and murder investigations. He then moved to Chicago Illinois in the early 1920's, where he would later become one of the most famous and feared gang members to live in Chicago. In Chicago, just like he was in New York, he was involved in brutal murders, and received praise and acknowledgment from many businessmen and politicians. Capone at this time was very much into illegal gambling, and the illegal sale of alcohol. Seeing that prohibition was in effect in the 1920's, Al Capone made a fortune by selling alcohol, and gambling. Capone was later found guilty for evasion of income tax payments and was sentenced to jail for 11 years, where he would then pass away.
