The movie American History X is a very controversial movie about the racism in America and the impressionability of contemporary youth. The movie shows the main character and the effects he had on his younger brother and what this younger brother went through as a result of what he grew up in. The younger brother lived with an indulgent mother, no father, and only had one older male to look up to, his neo-Nazi brother who was in prison. American History X is a good example of the struggle one adolescent encountered and how, with the help of his ex-con brother, changed his views on the world.
American History X is a 1998 film starring Edward Norton and Edward Furlong, which depicts what life is like for one family that is highly involved with a white supremacist gang in Venice Beach, called the D.O.C. In a flashback, Derek, the older brother, played by Norton, is seen in the first scene of the movie, after being woken up by his younger brother, Danny, played by Furlong, outside of their home in Los Angeles in nothing but his underwear, with a very large swastika tattooed on his chest, along with other white power tattoos. Danny woke Derek up because he saw a black man trying to break into Derek's car. Derek proceeded to get a gun and go outside, where he proceeded to kill two black men while one got away in a car. He shot one of the men to death, and then progressed to make the other one kiss the curb while he stomped his head in. All of this came about over a basketball game that was played previous to that night. A couple of the members of the D.O.C., headed by Derek at the time under the mastermind Cameron Alexander, were playing basketball at the local playground with some black guys when one of the so-called skinheads got into a fight with one of the black guys.
