Has slavery really ended? If that question was only directed to the United States, then that question is a definite yes. If one thinks about slavery on a global level, then the answer is no. If slavery can be eradicated in America, can't leaders in the third world countries put an end to slavery, especially slavery of children?
For the most part, in America our children are one of the most important things in our lives. We value them as individuals and look to them as our hope for a better world. Basically, I believe that American's view their children as the populace that will carry the torch of freedom in the future.
Child-labor laws protect American children. Unfortunately not all children are living in a nation that promotes a manifesto of child protection against the exploitation of children. Child labor is a serious problem in our world today especially, in the third world countries like Asia, Africa, and Latin America. These are only some examples of the nations that still work children for pennies a day. In countries like these, some parents are forced to bond their child for as little as fifteen dollars a day. These children may range in age from six to fourteen. They are forced to work like slaves in factories for well know companies who promote their products for a hefty price. There are many reasons why some parents are forced to sacrifice their children, and it could be nothing more than survival and poor economies.
David Cody, a professor of English at Hartwick College states, these children are forced to work in iron and coal mines, match and nail factories, and shipyards. Some children are forced to work up to sixteen hours a day and most die by the age of twenty-five. In some places these children are denied any type of education and a normal childhood.
