Junk food in schools

             Americans today are not well known for their eating habits. With so much junk food (defined as food being convenient, yet unhealthy) on the market, it can be hard to resist those barbecue-flavored chips or the watermelon candy. Although Americans have not always had this style of eating, it has definitely developed into the most common diet today. Children and teenagers are consuming junk as a substitute for a well-balanced meal because that is all that seems to be available to them. Schools in California have way too much junk food and not enough healthier foods. The most common type of food available in schools is a range from candy to cookies and soda. This was never an issue until it was discovered that bad eating habits could lead to health problems in the future. "We have such a tremendous problem with obesity in this country that leads to high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, just terrible diseases and all kinds of other problems..." (CBSNews.com). Junk food is now a serious problem that will only persist with time. Eating habits will need to be altered, and it is up to the schools to help. Schools should reduce the amount of junk food and increase the amount of healthier food in order to assure the safety and health of the children today.
             Schools all across California are facing the same problem, too much junk food and not enough healthier food. The question is why is there not enough healthier food available to the students? The answer is simple, money. This can definitely be an issue and can cause a huge controversial between the parents and the school district.
