Interior and Exterior Guidance in Siddhartha

             Herman Hesse's "Siddhartha" is a classic story about a young man in search of enlightenment. Siddhartha, in his home village, has everything he needs and does not struggle. However, he longs for something more in life which he is not receiving. After not feeling satisfied with the traditions and practices in his home village's religion, he begins his journey seeking someone to show him or take him towards enlightenment. He joins many different lifestyles and follows many different people while on his journey hoping that one of them would lead them to his goal. However, what Siddhartha does not initially realize is that this feeling he is searching for cannot be taught but instead discovered from within himself. After spending most of his life jumping from person to person, he ultimately see's that what he had been searching for was there with him the whole time. In Herman's Siddhartha, the main character (Siddhartha) is in search of enlightenment, however, after a while, he learns that enlightenment comes from interior guidance rather than exterior guidance.
             Siddhartha begins his journey towards enlightenment by going through three different organized religions, hoping to find an answer through one. The Brahmins, the Samanas, and the Buddhists each were external sources in Siddhartha's path. Siddhartha is born a Brahmin and spends most of his early life learning the Hindu ways. This is the first exterior source which is presented in the book. Siddhartha is not achieving enlightenment because he is simply following the same ideas and lifestyles in which his friends and family all are following. He never had a choice whether or not he wanted to follow the Brahmin, he was simply born into it. He soon realizes that not of the elders have reached enlightenment this way.
             Siddhartha begs his father to leave home and join a group called the "Samanas" in order to begin his search for enlighten...
