Jane Eyre: Passion VS Reason

             "Many of Jane's values are based on reason but ultimately many of her actions and decisions are driven by the heart." Discuss
             The character of Jane in Charlotte Bronte's novel Jane Eyre, was entirely revolutionary for the Victorian era. Whilst her values were shaped by her environs, her actions and decisions were often driven by an intense passion often contrary to societies norms.
             which indicate she was indeed a woman ahead of her time.
             The Victorian period spanned a brief seventy years in the nineteenth century. Like many eras, it possessed social standards that were expected to be adopted by its members. Jane's character is unique in that her views, values and beliefs moved directly against the society at the time. This is primarily due to her emotional nature and sense of injustice inside of her, which compelled her to defy the conventionalities set by their society.
             The physical appearance of Jane is portrayed as ordinary and plain, yet it is her resolution, firmness and tenacity of her character which sets her apart from the majority of Victorian society. Right from her childhood through adolescence to maturity, Jane displays her individuality and determination. She has the capacity for clear thinking and an instinctive sense of justice. At the age of ten, she defends herself from the bully John Reed by retaliating openly. She denounces Mrs. Reed with a denial of all the accusations made against her
             From the time of her childhood at Gateshead, Jane displayed a strong, unyielding constitution and a fiery emotional nature in which she often acted on impulse. This is shown when she expresses her displeasure of her Aunt Reed's actions "'What would Uncle Reed say to you, if he were alive?' was my scarcely voluntary demand.
