Many African Americans feel extremely targeted and discriminated against by the white community for none other than the colour of their skin. Cecil Foster, a respected social commentator and educated professor, wrote a short argument expressing his concerns towards the elevation of racism in Canada. Foster explores many different concerns that the black community has unceasingly expressed over the years, such as immigration, childhood torment and unfair judgements.
For many, it must be extremely difficult to immigrate to a new country because you must always expect the unexpected, however many only wish to come to Canada to be able to start a new and better life. Foster has expressed what many feel and go threw when they immigrate to Canada. "I believed that, if I immigrated to Canada and did well, I would find acceptance in a multicultural society... The worst thing about racism in Canada is that it is not open but subtle. I can't remember anybody ever calling me nigger ad yet I feel the pain of racism in the way people talk to me, handle me or just simply assume I am up to no good. It's what blacks call white stereotypical expectations." (Foster 1987). This just proves that many blacks feel subjected to some form of racism even if it is not threw verbal communication. It happens quite often that a black male will be suspected for a crime when he is just walking down the street and will be interrogated by a policeman or stared at when walking into a department store. The stereotypes that so many people have are unfortunate because they discriminate against another human being for no apparent reason. There is always some type of disappointment that arises in the lives of African American and usually the culture shock occurs at a very young age. For some reason, some parents do not approve of their white child being friends with a black child. It is extremely unfortunate that there are actually parents like that ...
