Archbishop Oscar Romero

             On August 15, 1917, archbishop, Oscar Arnulfo Romero, was born in Ciudad Barrios, El Salvador. Archbishop Romero was highly praised for his heroic struggle to speak out for the social and human rights for his people, eventually earning him the Nobel Peace Prize of 1979.
             Growing up, Romero faced the challenges of having to face his troublesome homeland, El Salvador. He had a basic education and worked to help support his family. He later received his apprenticeship. Romero then became with the Holy Spirit and longed to enter the Roman Catholic priesthood. Oscar began his studies and continued them, finally to become ordained in 1942.
             After being ordained, Romero spent two and a half decades as a perish priest and a diocesan secretary in San Miguel until he finally earned the office as auxiliary bishop of San Salvador in 1970-1974. After his term, Romero was stationed at a poor diocese before he returned back to his office as archbishop.
             After attending the Second Vatican Council, Archbishop Romero was highly influenced to take action on the needs of the people in South America. Knowing of the harsh and radical judgment in which these people faced, Romero knew that someone should take action. Because of his involvement with the diocesan newspaper, Orientacion, Romero was constantly participating in some of the largest controversial events for the Salvadorian Church. At these points in time, Romero remained ever so faithful to God and continued to fight for spiritual salvation, rather than that of the material world.
             The archbishop always turned his heart to the field workers of coffee plantations, giving them shelter and tried to help them the best that he could. Romero soon began to see that the fight against the oppression of his people would continue until conflict arose or revolting steps were taken.
