Chowing down hunger

             Although so far it has not been accomplished, I believe that this goal is still attainable within the next decade or so. I believe that the key is taking small steps at a time, rather trying to conquer world hunger all at once. With our knowledge about population, current level of technology, resources at our disposal, and a commitment to help those who are less fortunate, we can and must end starvation around the world before it gets worse.
             In order to combat world hunger, I believe that we must first eliminate hunger here in the United States. Even wealthy countries like our own, have a starvation problem. Of course the problem here is less severe, but it still exist. We must first control the situation here in a small arena, and then move on to the larger regions. By evaluating and doing everything step by step, we can take what we've learned in the smaller arena and apply it to places where hunger is more severe.
             We have all seen the images on televisions and magazines of children malnutritioned with bloated bellies, desperate for food. While these images continue to haunt us, we idly sit by and often flip the channel to avoid such disturbing images and refuse to help. Across the globe, "two billion people lack reliable access to safe and nutritious food" (Global Issues 45); yet nothing is being done. In addition to the public's
             ignorance, the ever-increasing population makes the problem even worse. The more children are born, the more mouths to feed.
             As we know, population is not as much of a problem in developed countries compared to that in third world countries. I believe that the main reason for this is because women in wealthier nations are empowered with the knowledge of contraception and having a say in how many children they will have.
