I am a member of the Wampanoag tribe. We live by the great ocean, near the bays. My people lived good lives until the pale men came to stay. I do not know the whole story because I am only twenty years old. My people encountered some strange people who fished, but none of them stayed or caused us any harm. All our problems started about nineteen years ago. A group of pale men with funny coats, eyes like animals, and light hair arrived here in our land and from that day forward life changed for my people.
When I was a young child a great ship arrived here. The ship was strange, it was longer than the great trees on our land, and had big fluffy sheets on top. Pale men came ashore while some men of my tribe were fishing. The men dropped their things and ran. They came to our village and told the people to hide because of what they had seen. All the women and children hid in the forest. Our chief sent a few men to greet the pale men. While we were hiding, we heard thunder. Night came, one of our men wandered back to our hiding place covered with red water. Everyone cried; I didn't know what was happening. He whispered something to the chief, then closed his eyes and never woke up. I had witnessed the first of many deaths I would see in my life.
Later that week we returned to our village. The pale men had not been there, everything was just like we left it. The next evening some pale men came into our village. They were going from house to house causing problems. We were afraid because my father had not returned yet. My mother ran to get help, but before she left she locked our door and told us to run if the bad men came. A little while later the door was knocked down.
