The humble beginnings of the New World could not have been anymore different. The stark contrast between the three main colonies was quite apparent. The motivation for the immigrants to move varied. Some were moving to avoid religious persecution, others for economic reasons. While others also moved due to political reasons. The three main areas the settlers moved to was the Chesapeake Bay Colony, the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and the Middle colonies. The different environments and location made for different colonists and different lifestyles.
             The very first people to settle in the New World were the Jamestown colonists. They arrived in America in the early 1600's. Their main motivation for moving to America was to escape the economic hardships that were gripping England. The growing population caused a lack of jobs, which in turn caused a large group of desperate people. The Virginia Company funded the first settlement in the Chesapeake Bay region. The beginning was rough and many of the people that had dared to venture to the New World died. Disease, starvation and lack of knowledge quickly killed off many colonists. With the introduction of a new drinking source and some knowledge of sanitation the colony became stable and began to market cash crops such as tobacco, indigo and cotton.
             The next people to make the journey across the "pond" were the Pilgrims. Their journey was a religious one. They moved to avoid religious persecution. The pilgrims wanted to raise their children in an environment they felt was suitable for their teachings. The Pilgrims landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620. The land that the Pilgrims had landed on was not very fertile and the seasons were harsh. The ability to generate some profits was almost impossible.
