Police Brutality: Totally Against Giuliani
Police brutality has been a serious issue these past few years. It seems as if police officers are taking advantage of their power. There's a right way to handle things and the police officers today are definitely not doing it the correct way. They seem to have forgotten the procedures learned in Police Academy. The police officers are here to maintain our streets, not to cause chaos or confusion. Riots are mainly started because of the actions of the police. Police officers do things and most of the time they get away with it. This causes uproar in our communities. How much longer do we have to suffer before the government takes action?
It all started in 1997, when a Haitian immigrant, Abner Louima was allegedly tortured by four cops. The four cops shoved a plunger into his rectum and mouth (Beals 1). Johnnie Cochran has expressed his outrage over police brutality by leading battles in the courtroom. He was the lead attorney for the Abner Louima trial and also represented the family of Diallo as well. He stated, "The issue of excessive force...is the issue that galvanizes our community like no other." The police are not above the law. The fact and the matter is that there has been too many mistakes (Black America... 22-23). Everyone is so quick to turn their heads and say that what was done to these people was a mistake. In the Louima trial, of the five police officers charged, only one pleaded guilty and another was found guilty. Also Louima is suing the city for $155 million. Robert Johnson, the black prosecutor, charged the officers with second-degree murder. He made it clear that he was not only s!
