The Libertarian Party only goes back to 1971. On December eleventh of that year the party was founded in the home of David Nolan. It was founded by disillusioned Republicans, Democrats and political newcomers who hoped to create an alternative to the old parties.

It was founded due to the realization that politicians had strayed from America's original libertarian foundation, with disastrous results. The Libertarians vision was the same as that of the original founders, which was the vision of a world where individuals are free to follow their own dreams in their own ways, a world of peace, harmony, opportunity, and abundance.
Libertarians are practical, they know that they can't make the world perfect, but they want to make it better. Libertarians have always worked to create a better, freer society for everyone.
Libertarians believe that the answer to America's political problems is the same commitment to freedom that earned American its greatness; free-market economy and the abundance, prosperity it brings, a dedication to civil liberties and personal freedom that marks this country above all others; and a foreign policy of non-intervention, peace, and free trade as prescribed by the America's founders.
Role the Government Plays in American Life
Libertarians focus on the individual person and their individual rights. It is said to the only political organization which respects a person as a unique and competent individual. The American heritage of liberty, enterprise, and personal responsibility is what the libertarians believe in. Obviously libertarians believe that the government shouldn't play a big role in the American life but they strongly believe that being free and independent is a great way to live.
