Because young people were more susceptible to Nazi persecution, children of the Holocaust could teach my generation and generations to come the value of all children, no matter what their religious background or ethnicity. I once heard someone say "Never tell a child her dreams are unlikely or outlandish; few things are more humiliating, and what a pity it would be if she believed you." Many people's dreams were deferred during the Holocaust because they lost their loved ones, their strength, and their hope.

Many encounters were documented where children witnessed the murder of parents, siblings, and relatives. In numerous other incidents, children were shot in front of their parents. I would never be able to deal with these actions because my family is my life! Their chances of survival were usually smaller than those of adults. Nazi persecution was directed against all Jewish families. After 1933 Jewish children faced terrible realities as their world of childhood and adolescence, usually a time of testing and experimentation, became a time of shrinking horizons and vulnerabilities.
