Teenage Obesity

Teenage obesity is an important matter because of the potential physical and psycho-social consequences of being overweight-especially those associated with peer pressure and ridicule. But not only the emotional distress felt by overweight teenagers is problematic; the unhealthy lifestyle can lead towards serious health disorders such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
A sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy food choice are the main reasons for the negative health trend. A healthy school environment and lifestyle is only possible through fun, interactive activities, and nutritious foods. Proper leadership and student involvement are the necessary factors needed in order to achieve the effective weight control programs appealing to all students, regardless of weight, to avoid ostracizing those with a problem.
Aerobics and yoga are excellent examples of fitness activities fit for a weight control program, for there are no differences in the athletic ability of overweight and normal-weight teens in those kinds of exercises. Such activities could be performed after school, or as a separate elective course offered during school, thus, providing an opportunity for all of the teens. The students should also be more familiar with the risks of being overweight, so the impact on that particular matter should be greater in health classes. Since unhealthy lifestyles have possessed the majority of today's teenagers, in most cases, lunch is their first meal of the day. This is an excellent opportunity to help kids eat right: introduce them to appealing, healthy foods, rich in vitamins and proteins, yet not lacking taste, and include these foods in the school breakfast as well as the lunch.
The only way for changes to occur is through great effort from the student leaders and schools to reverse the negative health trends, and stop the child obesity and overweight conditions among a growing number of America's young people.
